I also was intriguted to read that public transport use had soared in London in recent years despite its obvious deficiencies. However, I suspect its a a special case and the natural tendency in the developed world is for public transport usage to inexorably decline unless measures are taken to discourage car journeys -- as has happened in London -- and encourage public transport.
