Otis Elevator Company has opened what it claims is the world's first “green” elevator manufacturing facility in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA).
The TEDA facility, occupying 1.5m sq feet site, incorporates the latest energy-saving technologies to reduce site energy usage by at least 25% .It was designed and constructed to meet the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards.
The Tianjin factory uses extensive day lighting and natural ventilation, cool roofs to reduce heat island effects, radiant heating in offices and the cafeteria, intensive insulation, high-performance windows, and rainwater collection for site irrigation.
The centre will produce the latest generation of Otis elevators which are also designed to be friendlier to the environment. In addition to using half the energy of conventional geared machines, the new elevator's patented coated-steel belts and gearless machine do not require any additional lubrication, making the system cleaner for the environment.
Business is booming for Otis in China thanks to the large number of skyscrapers, including Shanghai's landmark Oriental Pearl Radio and TV Tower, the largest tower in Asia, which was the first structure in China to use Otis' double-decker elevator.
