Important Message to EngagingChina readers
Shanghai-based Shaun Rein of China Market Research recently got in touch to say that he has not been able to access EngagingChina for the past few weeks. That's worrying news.
We suspect — and hope — that this problem is related to the recent
earthquake which severely damaged undersea cables in the Taiwan area.
If that is the case, then normal service should hopefully be resumed by
February, according to the latest reports.
However, we contacted EngagingChina's US-based hosting provider,BlogHarbor, and they say it wouldn't be the first time that their hosted sites have been blocked:
The Chinese government
seemed to have blocked access to our sites once before, and it may have
done so again recently. While did have one China-based user say
recently that he could no longer access, one other user was able to.
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do if the Chinese government
decides to block our sites… I don't think it's possible for us to get the Chinese government to unblock our blog network if indeed it has done so.”
This is a potentially sinister development, but we'll put the conspiracy theory on hold until next month.
In the meantime, if you have recently tried to access EngagingChina
from inside China — or indeed anywhere in the Greater China region —
we would be very grateful if you would let us know if you have been
successful or not.
